The Oklahoma Sooners have always enjoyed success recruiting in southeastern Louisiana in the past, and this year is no different.

The Big XII power’s commitment list grew to 12 overall for 2020 with the verbal pledge of Covington High’s Edgerrin Cooper.

The 6-foot-2 1/2, 204 pounder with 4.6 speed considered offers from Oklahoma State, Houston, Miss. State, Arkansas State, Southern Miss, Tulane, Troy, La. Tech, ULL, ULM, Nevada, Colorado State, Memphis and Louisville. Cooper recorded 106 tackles with 13 for loss and a pair of sacks for the Lions last fall.

Cooper, who took an unofficial visit to Norman this past week, was impressed with the OU facilities and academics.

In his first year as Sooners defensive coordinator, Alex Grinch was giddy over the news of the commitment. Cooper is exactly the type of defender that he is looking for in his new attack-minded scheme. Grinch wants his players, particularly linebackers, to rush the passer, bring pressure off the edge, drop into coverage and tackle well in space. Cooper checks all of the boxes for that versatility.

Among his strengths, Cooper also takes good angles to the ball, shows good agility and reacts quickly on reads. One concern is that he currently avoids blockers more than he looks to take them on directly.
