Recruiting: John Curtis cornerback Donald Clay commits to SMU
John Curtis cornerback Donald Clay has committed to SMU, becoming the eighth pledge for the Ponies in the 2019 recruiting class.
Hahnville’s Jha’Quan Jackson committed to SMU less than three weeks ago.
Clay, ranked as my 13th best player from the Greater New Orleans area for the ’19 class, had Arizona State and Kentucky as his other two finalists. He considered offers from Tulane, Boston College, La. Tech, ULL, ULM, UTSA, Southern Miss, Memphis, Temple, Marshall, Indiana, Troy and UAB. He made a visit to SMU on May 4, stopped by Arizona State last weekend and attended Junior Day at Kentucky on Feb. 24. He also visited Mississippi State for their Junior Day.
For the Patriots last season, Clay had 39 tackles and broke up 10 passes.
SMU first-year cornerbacks coach Kevin Curtis, along with grad assistant and Baton Rouge native Chris Scott, collaborated on his recruitment. Curtis previously served on staff at Louisiana Tech.
