Recruiting: Grambling gains commitment from St. Helena QB Ricky Travis
If they can hold onto him through national signing day in 2018, the Grambling State Tigers feel like they may have landed their quarterback of the future.
Ricky Travis from St. Helena considered offers from Louisiana Tech, ULL, ULM, Southern Miss and Jackson State before pledging to Grambling. He has gotten looks from Power 5 programs such as Mississippi State, Baylor and Illinois. He attended camps held by NIKE in New Orleans and Under Armour in Houston.
Fully qualified with a 3.4 GPA, the 6-foot-4, 190 pounder threw for 1,053 yards in 2016, adding 573 on the ground. He was named District MVP helping the Hawks advance to state semifinals before bowing out to Madison Prep.
Travis, who operates a spread offense, is very athletic and capable of putting nice touch on out routes. He has solid mechanics, surveys the field well, shows good footwork, and does not get rattled. Travis can make tight window throws, possessing a powerful arm. He regularly makes the difficult throw appear easy.
Expect Travis to draw more attention as the recruiting process continues. It will be interesting if Grambling’s early interest eventually pays dividends with a signature.
