July has started with a bang for LSU and their football recruiting efforts with the commitment of Virginia Beach, Virginia edge rusher Naquan Brown.

Brown chose the Tigers over Miami, Penn State, Pitt, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder will need to add bulk and strength to play the edge in the Tigers’ 4-3 defensive alignment but the 13th commitment for the 2021 class has the frame to handle it. Brown was attracted to LSU for a number of reasons including the Bo Pelini defense.

Brown is the No. 11 weak side defensive end nationally in the class. He is the seventh best ranked prospect in the state of Virginia. Brown is similar to LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks, who recently entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

An active athlete, the Ocean Lakes High School standout covers a lot of ground, locates the ball quickly, uses his hands very well as a rusher, diagnoses play and beats double team blocking. He accelerates in his second step and blows by blockers as a pass rusher.

Current NFL defensive end Eli Harold also prepped at Ocean Lakes before signing with the University of Virginia. During his two seasons with the Cavaliers, Harold recorded 36.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks. He was drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft.

As for future LSU pledges, another player to keep tabs on is Alabama four-star running back Armoni Goodwin who has been committed to Auburn since March 22, 2019. He has been wavering recently allowing LSU to enter the picture.

The Hewitt-Trussville standout is the fifth rated runner in the 2021 class. The 5-8, 196-pound Goodwin has 4.4 speed but he missed all but three games last season due to a knee injury.
