Bastrop jumped out to a commanding lead on Friday evening at Independence Stadium on their way to capturing a 40-22 win against Huntington.

Rashard Lynch was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring three touchdowns for the Rams.

Bastrop got the fireworks started midway through the first quarter with an explosive 87-yard run from Lynch. His second touchdown of the night came on a seven-yard run to make the score 12-0 with 11:14 to go in the 2nd quarter.

Early in the second half, Bastrop would pick up right where they left off with another big play, a 62-yard scoring pass from Zy Scott to Semaj Tennent. The ensuing two-point conversion made it 20-0.

The defense got in on the act for the Rams with an interception from Kaithan Covington who returned it 34 yards for a touchdown less than a minute later.

Lynch’s one-yard run increased Batrop’s advantage to 33-0 with 6:42 to go in the third quarter.

Huntington finally generated offense after that. A nine-yard run from J’rell Joseph put the Raiders on the board late in the third quarter. A 26-yard touchdown pass from J’rell Joseph to Tahj Kochinsky drew them closer with 10:17 to go but the teams traded touchdowns after that.

For Bastrop, it was a satisfying bounce-back victory after giving up 62 points in a loss to Ouachita last week.

“We had a great win after a big loss,” said Bastrop head coach Cedric Sherrod.

Bastrop (3-1) will play Franklin Parish (1-2) next Friday while Huntington (3-1) will try to rebound when they travel to Jonesboro-Hodge (2-1).
