McMurry Park

The LHSAA announced late Thursday afternoon it is putting a three-day hold on its state baseball championship at McMurry Park in Sulphur.

After most of Thursday’s action was washed out by rain and lightning and the forecast for Friday and Saturday is for more of the same, all action has been postponed until Sunday.

With the first games of Thursday getting underway in Classes 4A, 3A and 1A, games are resuming at the same time on Sunday. One of those involves Kentwood, who started its game against Grand Lake in Class 1A.

All games which did not begin on Thursday are scheduled for an hour earlier on Sunday. For instance, the Division I semifinal games, originally scheduled for 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, will be played at 3:30 and 6:30 on Sunday.

LHSAA staff, collaborating with Sulphur Parks and Recreation and the area convention and visitors authority, came to the decision to postpone.

“Knowing we were going to have some weather, we were going to have some contingency plans in place,” LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine said Thursday night on the Life Resources Bottom Line show on WGSO 990 AM. “We had horrible rain and lightning delays. We had a lightning strike hit a tree behind Field 37 and (started) a fire.”

Bonine said many factors were taken into consideration, including playing on Mother’s Day, graduation exercises and which fields to use for the championship games.

“It’s the best we can do. We’re trying to make lemonade out of lemons,” said Bonine, who apologized in advance to all of the moms. “We contacted coaches who were already there.

“Everybody will have fresh arms. The pitchers who threw today will be able to come back.”

Bonine said there were brief conversations about alternative sites, including possibly moving the Division I bracket to New Orleans.

“We did have a conversation about that, but the weather (forecast) is the same,” Bonine said. “There wasn’t an in-depth conversation because the band of weather is all across south Louisiana.

“The rain isn’t an issue. It’s the lightning.”

Sulphur Parks and Recreation expects the effect of the inclement weather to continue to be an issue even when play resumes Sunday, so it is setting up shuttles to McMurry Park to alleviate concerns immediately around the facility located in a residential area:
