Ragin’ Cajuns standout Doucet headline Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball preseason honorees

NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana senior forward Ty’Reona Doucet was selected as the 2021-22 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year to lead the league’s preseason honors announced Thursday. A vote of the conference’s 12 head coaches determined the Preseason Player of the Year and Preseason All-Conference Teams.

Doucet, a Ville Platte, La., native, was a First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in 2020-21 and was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. She started all 21 games in which she played a year ago, ranking second on the team in scoring with 10.9 points per contest, while leading the team in total rebounds (167) and blocks (36).

Doucet led the Sun Belt Conference with a 52.4 percent (89-for-170) field-goal percentage. She also averaged 8.0 rebounds per game, the seventh-best mark in the conference. Doucet owned 36 blocks on the year, which marked the third-most in the conference.

Doucet averaged nearly a double-double in league play last season, boasting 10.8 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Doucet helped lead her Louisiana team to the program’s first Sun Belt Conference regular-season title and an appearance in the Sun Belt Tournament Championship Game in 2020-21.

The Sun Belt also announced its Preseason All-Sun Belt First, Second and Third teams (listed below) on Thursday.

Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selections include Coastal Carolina’s Aja Blount, Louisiana’s Doucet and Brandi Williams, Texas State’s Da’Nasia Hood and Troy’s Felmas Koranga.

Sun Belt Conference action begins Thursday, December 30. Teams will play a 16-game conference slate that will culminate with all 12 teams competing in the 2022 Sun Belt Women’s Basketball Championship at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla., March 2-7, 2022.
