Ragin’ Cajuns lead the nation in wins and are chasing the program’s best start ever

LAFAYETTE – In the third release of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Fall Top 15 Coaches poll, released Wednesday afternoon, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Volleyball team (11-0, 5-0 Sun Belt) joined the rankings landing at No. 15.

After receiving votes in the first two editions of the poll, Louisiana makes its official vault into the rankings for the first time. The Ragin’ Cajuns are the lone Group of Five program ranked in the poll, and the Sun Belt Conference’s current representative.

Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot’s group’s rise into the rankings is a by-product of the second-best start in program history. The 2020 group trails only the record 13 straight wins posted by the 1990 squad for the overall best start.

Louisiana collected 60 points from the ballots casted among the coaches within the AVCA organization for the Week 3 poll.

Teams in the ACC, Big 12, SEC, and Sun Belt Conference are eligible for the AVCA Fall Division I Coaches Poll.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are one of three Group of Five programs to appear on ballots casted. Texas State (34) and Coastal Carolina (7) are both receiving votes.

Powered by outside hitters Hali Wisnoskie (4.6 kills/set) and Kelsey Bennett (3.4 kills/set) who average a combined eight kills per set and guided by senior setter Avery Breaux who averages nearly 12 assists per set, the Ragin’ Cajuns possess one of the most potent offensive attacks in the nation. The squad averages nearly 15 kills per set (14.5) on a .275 hitting percentage and ranks Top 10 nationally in all offensive categories.

No. 15 Louisiana is scheduled to play its next eight matches at Earl K. Long Gym. The homestand begins Friday-Saturday, Oct. 16-17 with a key three-match Sun Belt series vs. Texas State (8-1, 3-0 Sun Belt).
