Privateers walk-off with first game win over Green Wave in Pelican Cup, 8-7

NEW ORLEANS – In a game that saw a little of everything, the University of New Orleans (6-7) defeated Tulane University (6-6) in walk-off fashion, 8-7, Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.

Owen Magee led off the ninth with a ringing double down the right field line. Beau Bratton moved Magee on a groundout and scampered home on a wild pitch to win the game.

Magee had a big night at the plate, going 2-4 with a home run, a double and a run scored. Jay Robinsonhit his first career grand slam and his first homer since April 17, 2016 and finished 2-3 at the dish with a triple and five RBI. Collin Morrill was 2-3 and Kenneth Yetter walked three times.

Mathew Oset (2-0) earned the win for the Blue and Silver after tossing a shutout ninth. Green Wave reliever Sam Bjorngjeld (0-1) was tagged with loss after only going 0.2 innings, giving up a hit and the winning run. Privateer starter John Michael Stephens got a no decision in 4.0 innings – giving up four hits and striking out four. Christopher DeMayo came in and tossed 2.1 innings in relief and struck out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNO got the scoring stated with a four run second highlighted by Robinson’s grand slam to give the good guys a 4-0 lead.

Tulane got a run back in the third but the Privateers got it back in the bottom of the inning on Magee’s solo shot for a 5-1 lead.

The Green Wave took its first lead of the game with a big five run eighth, four coming on a grand slam to give them 7-5 lead.

UNO tied the game in its half of the eighth with a two run inning. In the ninth, the Privateers sent their fans home happy with a walk off wild pitch.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNO
New Orleans heads to Southeastern Louisiana to begin Southland Conference play. Friday’s game in Hammond is set for 6:30 p.m.
