Privateers sweep George Washington to open 2022 volleyball campaign

WASHINGTON D.C. – The New Orleans Privateers made a big opening statement and rallied from an early third set deficit in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) victory over the George Washington Colonials on Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.

INSIDE THE BOX
Molly Kehoe had an efficient night with 10 kills and a .409 attack percentage. She also added five digs. Mauri Carver had five kills and six total blocks. Sophia Ewalefo chipped in with five kills, eight digs, two aces and two blocks.

Sheilah Purcell and Kamrynn Scroggins co-anchored the defense with 10 digs each. Scroggins added 24 assists. The Privateers held George Washington to a .117 attack percentage for the mtch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
George Washington scored the first four points of the third set but the Privateers climbed the hill successfully. With the score tied at 17-17, the Privateers went on a 7-2 run to put themselves on the brink of victory.

The home side staved off two match points but the third time was the charm as Trinity Jackson notched a kill to give the Privateers a season-opening win.

After falling behind 7-4 in the early stages of the first sets, the Privateers blitzed the home side by going on a 13-3 run. The stretch started with the Privateers scoring five consecutive points, three of which came on George Washington attack errors.

The set got tight late at George Washington narrowed the Privateer lead to 22-21. However, the Privateers held to the end of the set with Ewalefo in on two of the last three points on a block assist and a kill.

New Orleans started fast in the second set as they raced to an 8-3 lead. They had to hold off a George Washington charge though as the score leveled at 11-11. The rest of the set was back and forth with six ties total but the Privateers took it on a George Washington ball handling error.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will face two squads on Saturday with a match against Georgetown at 11 a.m. and another versus George Mason at 6 p.m.
