Privateers start fast in sweep of Texas Southern

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (4-4) remained unblemished on the weekend after a decisive 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17) victory over the Texas Southern Tigers (0-8) on Saturday afternoon at the Lakefront Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers wasted no time jumping out to a huge set one lead. Rita Zecchin’s serve gave the Tigers fits and the Privateers won seven straight points to open the proceedings. New Orleans steadily grew their lead to double figures at 15-5 and never looked back.

In the set, New Orleans had 11 kills while the visiting Tigers were limited to six kills on the set. It set up the remainder of the match where the Privateers held Texas Southern to an .092 attack percentage.

Set two saw a different beginning as the Tigers rattled off five straight points to open the set. However, New Orleans settled in and steadily climbed their way back to level terms at 13-13. That was art of a six-point run which vaulted New Orleans to a 16-13 lead.

In that 6-0 stretch, Sophia Ewalefo had two kills. Ewalefo led the Privateers in kills for a second consecutive match.

After the Privateers checked out to a 25-18 set victory in the second, they parlayed that momentum into a winning third set. New Orleans used a 10-4 spurt from the point they were trailing 11-10 to put the set out of reach. The Privateers scored the last four points including the match winner from Sydney Gott.

INSIDE THE BOX
Ewalefo led the way with 12 kills and added 11 digs. Gott finished with six kills and a .429 attack percentage. She was also in on two blocks. Kamryn Scroggins had 36 digs, three kills and four digs. Sheilah Purcell led the way in digs with 13.

Zecchin finished with three aces. Carver, Ewalefo and Chandler Lee each had a solo block on the match.

The Privateers conclude their weekend with a match against Western Illinois on Saturday at 11 a.m.
