Pope John Paul wins boys Division IV state swimming title

Pope John Paul II captured the boys Division IV state swimming championship Thursday at SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur.

The Jaguars held off Dunham by 30 points for the title with Newman finishing third. Episcopal School of Acadiana was fourth with Ascension Episcopal fifth.

Christian Johnson of Newman was a star, winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:48.61 and capturing the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:43.69.

Pope John Paul II won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:36.60.

Episcopal School of Acadiana won the girls Division IV state title by 30 points over Holy Savior Menard. Ascension Episcopal was third with St. Martin’s Episcopal fourth and McGehee fifth.

Mady Hill of Pope John Paul II was outstanding, winning both the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.44 and the 100 freestyle in 53.54.

Quinn Haley of Northlake Christian was victorious in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:02.03.

E.D. White Catholic swept the boys and girls titles, edging Episcopal in the girls competition by 10 points with St. Charles Catholic third, Lutcher fourth and University High fifth.

Lexie Rodrigue of John Curtis Christian won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:01:38.

Isabelle Mundee of Lusher Charter won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:06.07.

The Cardinals won the boys competition easily with University High second and Lusher Charter third. Calvary Baptist was fourth and Haynes Academy was fifth.

Derek Zhang of Lusher Charter was the individual star, winning both the 100 butterfly in a time of 48.88 and the 100 backstroke in a time of 48.53.
