Pope John Paul, Lakeshore, SSA and Mandeville big winners in Shreveport at 2020 LHSAA State Swimming Championships

In another change in a year filled with them, the 2020 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Swimming Championships were held in Shreveport at the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana.

The meet had been held in Sulphur since 2006 at the SPAR Aquatic Center, but due to the damage from Hurricane Laura, the LHSAA had to find a different venue for the state meet.

The longer trek did not keep four St. Tammany area schools bringing home trophies.

The Pope John Paul II Jaguars started it all off in the morning on day one, turning around the near team triumphs of past years. Since 2015, the Jaguar boys have been the state runner-up four times. They put an end to that, pacing second place Newman to take the Division IV crown.

The Jaguars scored 337 points to Newman’s 285 for Pope’s first state title in swimming.

On day three, the Lakeshore boys were able to capture Division II state-runner up honors after placing third in 2019. “The boys were super excited to take the trophy home,” Northshore Swim Team Sponsor Meredith Alvarez said.

In the afternoon of day three, coach Chris Prator’s dominant St. Scholastica squad captured their 10th straight state title. The Doves finished with 381 points to take the Division II crown while St. Thomas More was second with 292.

On the afternoon of day four, Robbie Fritscher and his Mandeville girls garnered state runner-up honors in Division I with 227 points, not far behind St. Joseph’s with 280.5. This year was Fritscher’s third straight taking second.
