Pope John Paul II, Ascension Episcopal claim state swimming titles

Pope John Paul II captured the LHSAA Boys Division IV state championship Wednesday in Shreveport at the BHP Billiton YMCA.

The Jaguars amassed 337 points with Newman second with 285 points. Country Day was fifth.

David Legnon was the star for the Jaguars, winning both the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Pope John Paul II also won the 200 freestyle relay.

Pierce Thionville of Newman won both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke to pace the Greenies.

Ascension Episcopal won the Girls Division IV championship with 291 points with Newman second at 231 points. St. Martin’s Episcopal was fourth.

Katherine Kramer of Newman won the 100 freestyle while Juliette Magner of St. Martin’s Episcopal took first in the 100 backstroke.

The boys and girls Division III championships are Thursday, the Division II titles will be decided Friday and the Division I championships are Saturday in Shreveport.
