PJP sweeps Amite, St. Charles rallies past Destrehan, MCA and Dominican cruise to district wins

Area Prep Volleyball Report for Wednesday, Oct. 27

Don’t look now but traditional power Pope John Paul II has risen from the middle of the pack to a legitimate contender once again in Division IV.

The Jaguars handled Amite 25-7, 25-10, 25-15 at home in a District 4-IV match Tuesday.

The win was the 10th straight for Pope John Paul II.

Kady Benedic had six kills, Savannah Dyer and Mallory Norton each served eight aces and Ali Tullis finished with 38 assists for the Jaguars.

Pope John Paul II was 12th in the most recent Division IV power ratings from the LHSAA but rising.

Pope John Paul II (15-7, 7-0) finished district play unbeaten and will play at five-time defending Division V state champion Country Day today at 5 p.m.

The Warriors (5-14, 3-4) have completed their regular season.

In a River Parish showdown, St. Charles Catholic fell behind two sets before staging a furious rally to overcome Destrehan 17-25, 15-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-12 in LaPlace.

Mya Brown was a force with 20 kills and 40 assists and two blocks, Madison Hebert had 12 kills, 26 assists and five blocks and Morgan Nuccio finished with six kills and 20 assists and three aces for the Comets. Camryn Triche had 12 digs and Morgan Nuccio had three aces for St. Charles Catholic.

The Comets (8-7) have won three straight matches and return to action today in Reserve against Riverside Academy at 4:30 p.m. while the Wildcats (13-7) also return to action today, hosting Ascension Catholic at 4:30 p.m.

Mount Carmel Academy had no trouble at West Jefferson, whipping the Buccaneers 25-5, 25-4, 25-10 Tuesday in a District 8-I match.

Junior Sarah Bernadas had five kills while junior Makayla Page had four kills for Mount Carmel. Seniors Ella Mauterer and Sara Carollo each served four aces. Sophomore Nola Sevin added 16 digs and junior Ellen Brown finished with 12 assists.

The Cubs (24-13, 3-1) are back in action today, hosting Archbishop Chapelle at 5:30 p.m. while the Buccaneers (3-12, 1-3) host Higgins today at 4:30 p.m.

In another District 8-I match, top-ranked Dominican dismissed John Ehret 25-4, 25-9, 25-7 at home.

Junior O’neil Haddad led the way for Dominican with eight kills and served two aces and a block while sophomore Anna Taylor added four kills and two digs. Junior Zoe Smith served four aces. Sophomore Gabby Marcello dished up 13 assists while senior Kate Baker had 11 assists. Senior Ellie Dalton had six assists and three digs.

Dominican (36-1, 4-0) will host Chalmette Thursday at 5:30 p.m. while the Patriots (8-8, 1-3) close out the regular season Thursday at Mount Carmel at 5:30 p.m. in district play.
