Stephen Klein’s single with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning scored T.J. Thomas from second base, giving the Pedal Valves Cardinals a 5-4 victory over Troy, Alabama, in the opening game of the American Legion Southeast Regional at Tampa.

The Cardinals never led until Klein’s walk-off hit. They rallied three different times to tie the game, including a solo homer from Ron Franklin with one out in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Thomas led off the bottom of the eighth with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Klein pulled one through the right side and Thomas scored well ahead of the throw home.

Pedal Valves will play a winner’s bracket game at approximately 4 p.m. CDT Thursday. Three more first-round games are on tap for Wednesday.
