Patrick Surtain announced as part of Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced Wednesday the selections for its Class of 2023, including former Southern Miss football standout Patrick Surtain, which will be inducted this summer.

Surtain, an all-around athlete growing up in New Orleans, played quarterback, baseball, basketball, and ran track.

He attended Southern Miss where he was a four-year letterman (1994-97) as a defensive back and was the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 1997. He was a first-team C-USA selection both his junior and senior years and second-team All-America selection by the Sporting News in 1997.

On the career school charts, Surtain ranks third in interceptions (16) trailing only Mississippi Sports Hall of Famers Bubba Phillips and Ray Guy in that category. He also ranks fourth in career pass breakups for Southern Miss with 31.

He was named a Conference USA member of the Team of the Decade, holds a place Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Southern Miss Team of the Century.

He was a 2nd round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 1998 draft, appearing in every game his rookie year. By his third year in the league, he started all 16 games, had five interceptions, forced two fumbles, and had 44 tackles and nine assists.

In 2002, he was named the NFL Defensive Back of the Year with six interceptions. Surtain was a three-time Pro Bowl selection in his 11-year pro career and is on the list of Dolphins All-time Top 100 players.

Surtain currently serves as a defensive assistant coach for the Dolphins.

Joining Surtain in the 2023 Mississippi Sport Hall of Fame are Jeff Herrod, Paul Maholm, John Mangum, Jim Page, Tony Rosetto, Carol Ross and Lewis Tillman.

This impressive group will be formally enshrined next summer during the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend presented by Wayne Sanderson Farms and the Sanderson Farms Championship on July 28 – 29, 2023. Tickets will go on sale in January 2023.
