GONZALES, La. — Parkview Baptist bounced back from a tough two-point opening week loss to Catholic High with a dominant performance Friday night in defeating East Ascension 29-7 at Spartan Stadium.

The victorious Eagles did most of their damage on the ground, rushing the ball 51 times for 244 yards while allowing the Spartans a measly 33 yards on 22 attempts. That ground attack helped PBS hold on to the ball for more than 31 minutes.

Connor Joffrion got things started for the visiting Eagles by sprinting 61 yards up the right side for a touchdown on Parkview’s second play from scrimmage, giving his team an early 6-0 lead.

After a defensive stop, Joffrion did it again. Alex Aucoin found the senior running back with a quick pass. After a couple of quick moves, Joffrion was off to the races on an 82 yard score. Just like that, Parkview led 13-0 with 4:57 still to play in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, East Ascension returner Jimel London lost the ball. Parkview would recover at the Spartan 28 yard line. Seven plays later, Mason McKey would boot the first of his three field goals to put the Eagles up 16-0 after one quarter of play. His second gave Parkview a 19-0 lead at the half.

East Ascension relied on big plays from London to defeat Lutcher 30-13 last week. The CB/KR/WR/RB scored four touchdowns in that win, but the Eagles made him a non-factor along with pretty much the rest of the Spartan offense.

At halftime, East Ascension had accumulated a total of 65 yards of offense (on 22 plays) and just four first downs.

Parkview didn’t let up in the second half.

Eagles fullback Parker Kirby plowed his way up the middle from the four yard line for a touchdown with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter. The extra point put Parkview up 26-0. Kirby finished the game with 16 carries for 114 yards, leading all rushers in both categories.

East Ascension was able to put together one complete drive early in the fourth quarter. Working on a short field, the Spartans went 35 yards in six plays, capped by a leaping one yard touchdown run from Adrian Johnson. The PAT cut the deficit to 19, but that was the end of the Spartan comeback.

McKey nailed the capper, a field goal from 26 yards out with 40 seconds remaining for the final margin.

The Eagles won the air war with East Ascension as well (82 yards to 79), though Parkview attempted only three passes the entire game.

Parkview (1-1) will host the John Curtis Patriots next Friday night, while East Ascension (1-1) will take on Thibodaux High School back in Spartan Stadium.
