Notebook: Scouting the top talent in nine LHSAA football championship games

This coming weekend will offer a stage for some outstanding high school football players. Some will move onto college football, and others have to refine their skills just a bit in order to reach the next level.

How about some down and dirty info on the top talent set to play in nine LHSAA state football title games at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome? Here are some names with scouting and recruiting notes if you want to see potential future college and maybe even NFL stars in action this week.

WR Trae Shropshire (6-3, 175) 4.5 forty. Deep threat. Offers from Kansas, Arizona State and Nicholls
CB Tyler Judson (6-1, 180) 4.65 forty, 36″ vertical. Open field tackler. Instincts
OG Blake Anderson (6-3, 298) 415 squat, twice All District. Nasty demeanor. Southern Miss interested and Houston watching.

ATH Anthony “Pooka” Williams (5-8, 165) 4.27 forty, 39 1/2″ vertical. 63 touchdowns past two years. Is clone of Rocket Ishmael. Trying to tackle him is like trying to catch confetti or a balloon in a wind storm. Kansas commit.
OT Larry Dixon (6-4, 335) Miss. State the leader. ULL, Texas Tech, Houston and Kansas.
DB Hunter LeBlanc (6-0, 170) Ball skills, tackler. McNeese, SLU, ULM,. All Metro in baseball batting .395 with 21 stolen bases.
WR Michael Gray (5-7, 160) 4.4 forty, runs 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Long jump over 22 feet.
WR Jamal Byrd (6-3, 185) brother LaRon (Miami Hurricanes and NFL). Southern has interest.

DT Ronell Burbank (6-2, 240) Nicholls, Northwestern State, SLU, Jackson State, Southern.
DB Jamier Jackson (6-1, 200) Southland schools
DT Delano Smothers (5-10, 290) Alcorn, Southern, Jackson State.
QB Skyler Perry (6-3, 200) Had 1951 yards passing with 22 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. SWAC schools watching.
CB Devin Bush (6-0, 184) 4.4 forty. 2019 class. LSU, Georgia Tech, So. Carolina, Auburn, Miss. State, Texas A&M and Tennessee. LSU may have advantage. Can back pedal and transition. Jumps route. Plays with great confidence.
OG Titus Jones (6-3, 265) Memphis commit.
DB Quindell Johnson (6-0, 185) 4.55 forty. Memphis commit. Closing speed, disruptive
WR Anthony Spurlock (6-1, 170) Oregon State pledge. Separation, good hands. 3,758 yards, 9 touchdowns.
CB Chance Carroll (6-2, 175) Sun Belt schools.
RB Ronnie Jackson (6-1, 185) 922 yards. 4 touchdowns vs. Landry-Walker.
RB Ahmad Antoine (5-10, 185) 911 yards rushing.
OLB Sheldon Celestine (5-11, 189) can play strong safety. Southland Conference schools.
DB Kendell Johnson (5-8, 175) special teams, Sun Belt, Southland Conference.

QB Chris Penton (6-0, 185) 4.57 forty, 3,572 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, 5 interceptions. In-state schools watching. Quick release, pin point accuracy, feels pressure coming, keeps eyes downfield, greta touch passes, doesn’t get rattled, goes through progressions. He will be a steal for someone.
WR Jalen Willis and Jacob Bernard combined for 26 touchdown catches. Bernard is good baseball player.
DT Tylan Driver (6-2, 290) offer from South Alabama. More will come.
