NOLA Gold hosts San Diego in MLR 1-2 showdown
NEW ORLEANS – First place in the Major League Rugby standings table is on the line Saturday at Gold Stadium when the NOLA Gold welcomes the San Diego Legion.
The match kicks off at 2 p.m. and will be nationally televised by CBS Sports Network.
NOLA has won nine of 12 matches this season and leads MLR with 50 points. San Diego is second with 47 points, but the Legion has played one more match than the Gold.
Saturday’s match pits MLR’s top-ranked offensive attack in NOLA against the league’s top defense in San Diego. The Gold has averaged one try per 16.8 minutes, while the Legion has allowed tries at half that rate – one every 33.5 minutes.
By a slim margin, NOLA remains the highest-scoring team in MLR with 392 points, one more than Glendale. San Diego is fourth with 378 points.
The Legion and Gold are first and second in the league, respectively, in both point differential and try differential.
NOLA’s Tristan Blewett had a streak of three consecutive matches with a try snapped against Austin last week, but remains second in MLR with nine tries. Eric Howard, who scored his fifth try in the Gold’s last five matches in the opening minute against Austin, ranks tied for third in the league with eight tries.
San Diego’s Joe Pietersen ranks second in the league in both goal kicking accuracy and scoring. Pietersen has 130 points, just ahead of NOLA’s JP Eloff, who is fourth in MLR with 119 points.
Saturday’s match is the first meeting of the year between NOLA and San Diego. They will face off again in the regular-season finale on June 2 in San Diego.
