NOLA Gold downs Austin, moves back into first place in MLR
NEW ORLEANS – The NOLA Gold led virtually from start to finish in a 26-14 victory over Austin Elite Rugby Saturday at Gold Stadium.
NOLA earned five points in the victory – four for the win and a bonus point for scoring four tries – to move back atop the standings table in Major League Rugby with 50 points. San Diego, which dropped back to second place with 46 points, plays at Toronto on Sunday.
Eric Howard’s try barely a minute into the match – his fifth in the Gold’s last five matches – gave NOLA a lead it would not relinquish. Ignatio Dotti’s try in the 31st minute made it 12-0, and the Gold led 12-7 at halftime.
NOLA put things away early in the second half. The Gold was awarded a penalty try in the 43rd minute, which was followed by a try from Billy Stewart to make it 26-7.
It was the 11th time in 12 matches this season NOLA earned the bonus point for tries. Austin’s 14 points were the second-fewest allowed by the Gold this year.
NOLA continues its three-match home stand next Saturday when it welcomes San Diego to Gold Stadium in what could be a first-place showdown.
