SUGAR LAND, Texas – No. 2-seeded Central Arkansas scored three runs in the 10th inning Saturday, rallying to defeat No. 3-seeded Southeastern Louisiana, 6-3, and advance to the championship game of the 2019 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament at Constellation Field.

Southeastern (33-27) scored a two-out run in the second inning. Nick Ray worked a walk off Bears’ starting pitcher Mark Moyer, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then scored on Trey Harrington’s line-drive single up the middle.

UCA (32-26) responded with single runs in their next two trips to the plate, tying the game in third inning and taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

Despite walking six batters, Harrington’s go-ahead single was the only hit the Lions managed off Moyer until the fifth. With one out, Cody Grosse singled to left-center field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kyle Schimpf gave Southeastern a 3-2 lead with two outs, blasting a two-run home run to left-center. The opposite-field shot was the 10th of the season for the senior from Covington, Louisiana.

With a tournament-record 11 double plays, the Lions ran into trouble attempting to turn its third of the game in the seventh. On a routine ground ball to shortstop, Grosse’s throw to double-play partner Brennan Breaud wound up down the right-field line. With a pair of runners in scoring position and no outs, reliever Jared Biddy issued a walk to load the bases.

Biddy struck out the next hitter but UCA’s nine-hole hitter grounded out to second, plating the tying run.

The teams traded tense innings, with the Lions stranding the potential winning run in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

After the Bears regained the lead in the 10th, Southeastern went up and down in order for the only time in the game. The Lions left at least one runner on base in each of the first nine innings, stranding 11 overall.

Reliever Conner Williams (4-1) earned the win, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings. Cody Davenport struck out two of three batters he faced in the 10th to earn his first save of the season. Biddy (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – three earned – in four innings of relief.

Nathan Pilutti (2-for-4) and Schimpf (2-for-4) each picked up multiple hits for the Lions.
