USA Today Poll

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team put a stamp on its historic season by earning two votes in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, which was released on Monday.

After winning the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in school history, Nicholls made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Nicholls posted 19 wins for the season, tying its program record set in the 2012-13 season. The victory in the SLC title game gave Nicholls its seventh consecutive win, which also tied a program best.

The poll was revealed a day after the national championship game, with champion Notre Dame taking the No. 1 spot with all 32 first-place votes. National runner-up Mississippi State, which defeated Nicholls in the opening round of the tournament, finished at No. 2 after finishing with a 37-2 record. The Colonels also hosted No. 9 Baylor and played at LSU, which received three votes.

Nicholls will lose two seniors, Tia Charles and Marina Lilly, from the championship team, but return its two top scorers – Southland Player of the Year Cassidy Barrios and Southland All-Tournament honoree Tykeria Williams.
