THIBODAUX, La. – Heading into its final home game of the season, the Nicholls State University football team moved up to its highest ranking in 10 years as the Colonels placed at No. 17 in Monday’s FCS Coaches Top 25 Poll.

At 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Southland, the Colonels climbed six spots in the poll after fending off a late comeback against UIW in a 38-31 victory. The win was the fourth straight for the Colonels and it also secured a winning overall record for the season – both firsts since 2005.

The 2007 season was the last time the Colonels were ranked before this year. In that campaign, Nicholls saw its highest ranking at No. 13 in the Oct. 15 media poll.

The Colonels are one of four teams from the Southland Conference ranked in the coaches poll. With a perfect 6-0 record in league play, Central Arkansas heads the SLC teams with a No. 4 ranking. Tied for second place in the standings with Nicholls, Sam Houston State was just eight votes behind UCA for No. 5. At 4-2 and in fifth place in the Southland, McNeese rounded out the Southland teams at No. 22.

Nicholls just missed cracking the STATS FCS Poll for the first time this season, tallying 388 votes to finish three behind Kennesaw State for No. 25. UCA, Sam Houston and McNeese all hold their same rankings for the media poll.

The home finale against HBU on Saturday, Nov. 4 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by the general public at a discount rate of $5 off, and military and faculty/staff can purchase $5 tickets for up to three people. Online orders will be taken at NichollsTickets.com all week and tickets can be purchased at the Nicholls Athletics Ticket Office at 985-448-4790 up until Friday.
