FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team will take on Auburn in the opening round of the 2018 Preseason WNIT, Triple Crown Sports announced Tuesday afternoon. The matchup between the Colonels and Tigers is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tipoff on Friday, Nov. 9 at Auburn Arena.

Coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance, the Colonels return their two leading scorers – Southland Player of the Year Cassidy Barrios (17.3 ppg) and SLC All-Tournament selection Tykeria Williams (13.2). The duo helped guide Nicholls to a 19-14 record and a Southland Conference Tournament championship.

The matchup against Auburn will be the second in program history, with the Tigers winning the lone meeting, 95-48, in 1999. Under sixth-year head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, Auburn posted a 14-15 overall record last year. The Tigers return four starters from one of the NCAA’s best defensive teams, which ranked No. 2 in the nation in steals.

The 16-team field includes nine teams playing in the event for the first time; the tournament features a three-game guarantee for all teams. All games are hosted by participating schools, with the championship game televised on CBS Sports Network at 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 18.

The consolation round schedule will be determined after Round 1; in the winner’s bracket, Round 2 is set for Nov. 11, with the semifinals running Nov. 13/15.
