PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell 6-3 to Ohio State University in its opener of the Cox Diamond Invitational Friday at the Blue Wahoos Stadium.

The Colonels (1-8) recorded three hits and the first was an RBI single to center field by senior catcher Kyle Knauth in the very first frame. Senior lefty Alex Ernestine (0-2) held the Buckeyes (6-3) in check for four innings before allowing five runs in the fifth. Ohio State tallied four of its six hits in that inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from second baseman Brady Cherry.

Nicholls scored a run in the seventh on a groundout from freshman outfielder Dane Simon that plated Knauth. Knauth came back up in the eighth and stroked a solo homer to right field to conclude the scoring for the Colonels.

Connor Curlis picked up the win for the Buckeyes, tossing 6.1 innings of two-hit ball with seven strikeouts. Seth Kinker earned his second save of the season as he threw a perfect ninth.

Nicholls has a quick turnaround, facing Eastern Michigan tomorrow at 11 a.m.
