HOUSTON – The Nicholls State University baseball team was three outs from stealing the series against Houston Baptist University Saturday, but Huskies catcher Matt Heck spoiled the trip with a walk-off two-run homer to left field.

HBU (8-12, 2-1 SLC) won the first game of the day 13-4 behind two homers and five RBIs from Spencer Halloran. The Huskies 5-4 victory in game 2 also ruined senior Cayden Hatcher’s bid for a complete-game win.

In the second contest, the Colonels (6-14, 2-4 SLC) commenced the scoring in the second inning when senior Kyle Knauth advanced to home from second on a throwing error by third baseman Elijah Simon. Fellow senior Gage Teer was also plated when junior Landon Powell smacked a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Nicholls an early 2-0 edge.

Halloran answered in the fourth inning with a solo homer. Teer then responded in the sixth with a sacrifice fly that scored senior Chet Niehaus as the Colonels regained a two-run margin.

HBU received a solo homer from Anthony Jones in the eighth before Heck’s walkoff in the ninth sealed the series.

The Colonels host McNeese in a weekend series beginning Friday. First pitch on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
