FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Roddy Peters is Southland Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by

The three-time Southland weekly honoree paced the Colonels (18-9, 12-2 SLC) to a 2-0 week, winning a one-point thriller at home over then second place Sam Houston State (17-11, 11-4 SLC) before topping Central Arkansas (13-14, 7-7 SLC) on the road 87-83.

Nicholls, who is searching for its first Southland championship since 1998, controls its own destiny heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. This week the Colonels compete at McNeese (9-15, 6-8 SLC) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT and host New Orleans (14-12, 11-4 SLC) on Saturday at 6 p.m.

This is the third weekly award for Peters this season and second in three weeks. He won the award on Jan. 15 and Feb. 5.

Peters began the week going 7-for-13 for 15 points in Wednesday’s one-point victory against Sam Houston State, 73-72. The senior from Washington, D.C., then shined in a 30-point outing at Central Arkansas, adding eight rebounds and seven assists to his name. He finished 14-of-16 from the charity stripe and iced the game with a steal and slam. The senior guard ranks second in the league in scoring in conference games, averaging 19.9 points per game. He also averages 6.1 rebounds per game in Southland play, good for 14th in the conference.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
