Nicholls, Abilene Christian earn three First Team All-Academic Selections

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls pitcher Megan Landry is the 2018 Southland Conference Softball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday with its all-academic teams. All yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition.

Landry, the 2018 Southland Pitcher of the Year, is one of five student-athletes on the all-academic first team with a perfect 4.00 GPA. The junior from Pierre Part, La., had a season that saw her lead the Colonels to a regular season championship. The secondary education – English major is a consecutive honoree to the all-academic team. She was also named to the Google Cloud Academic-All District and All-America teams.

Eleven student-athletes earned automatic selections to the first team. Seven members garnered the automatic selection as a member of the All-Conference First Team in May, six were Google Cloud All-District selections and five claimed Google Cloud All-America® honors.

Abilene Christian’s Peyton Hedrick is the only student-athlete to be voted to the top team. She held a 3.80 GPA as a kinesiology major. She, teammate Hannah Null and McNeese’s Erika Piancastelli collected their third Southland all-academic selections.

Sam Houston State’s four selections are the most among the 10 schools represented between the two teams. Abilene Christian, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin snagged three spots. Central Arkansas, McNeese and Northwestern State have a pair each while Houston Baptist and Lamar both picked up a single selection.

The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for All-Academic selection, excluding pitchers. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or Google Cloud Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
