Nicholls forward Cain adds LSWA Player of the Week honor

Chelsea Cain at UNO 2022

LAFAYETTE, La. – Nicholls State University women’s basketball forward Chelsea Cain received her second weekly honor following her performance in the Colonels’ league opener as she was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

Cain, who was also named Southland Player of the Week, led Nicholls to a 69-68 victory at New Orleans after matching her career high of 29 points. Cain scored the final points of the game on a putback with six seconds remaining, lifting the Colonels to a win in their Southland opener.

A native of Prairieville, Cain was clutch down the stretch by going 5-for-5 from the field and connecting on all four free throw attempts in the final five minutes of the contest. She scored the Colonels’ final 14 points en route to matching her career high. Cain finished 11 of 21 from the field and added nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Colonels are back in Stopher Gym for the first time in 2022, hosting Northwestern State on Thursday, Jan. 20 before taking on Southeastern Saturday for an ESPN+ doubleheader. Tipff Thursday against the Lady Demons is scheduled for 5 p.m.
