THIBODAUX, La. – A slow start by the Nicholls State University women’s basketball team turned out to be too much to overcome against Jackson State, as the Colonels were handed a 75-60 loss Friday night in Stopher Gymnasium.

Nicholls (1-3) had just one point through the first five minutes of the game with JSU (1-3) taking a 10-point lead. The Colonels closed the deficit to two in the second quarter behind seven consecutive points from Chyna Allen, who totaled a career-high 18, but would never get any closer the rest of the way.

Allen was the lone Colonel in double figures, connecting on 6 of 13 from the field. She went 0-for-3 from behind the arc as Nicholls struggled for the game, making 3 of 15. Anna McKendree had two of the 3-pointers and scored eight points, while Bryanna Washington added nine points off the bench.

Nicholls had no answer inside against All-SWAC center Ameshya Williams, who filled up the stat sheet with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks. Dayzsha Rogan also had a strong outing for JSU with 21 points.

Led by Williams, the Lady Tigers held the Colonels to 37 percent shooting for the game and were plus-12 in rebounding, helped by 16 on the offensive end. It led to 22 second-chance points and a 46-24 advantage in the paint.

After the rough first quarter, Allen’s hot streak brought Nicholls within two at 26-24. She connected on two jumpers and three free throws during the stretch. But in the final three minutes of the half, the Lady Tigers outscored Nicholls 11-2 and never looked back.

The visitors expanded their 39-28 halftime lead to as much as 19 points in the third quarter and 24 in the fourth. The win snapped a three-game winning streak in the series by the Colonels.
