LAKE CHARLES – McNeese cornerback Colby Burton and place kicker Gunnar Raborn have been selected as this week’s Southland Conference Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week respectively, the league office announced on Monday.

The award is presented by MidSouth Bank.

Burton, a junior from League City, Texas, intercepted two passes in Saturday’s 23-21 win over Central Arkansas, both coming in the first half.

His second pick came in the Cowboys’ end zone, with less than a minute to play in the second quarter. His final interception came after UCA recovered a muffed punt at the McNeese 9-yard line. He is the second Cowboy player this season to pick off two passes in a single game.

Raborn capped the weekend by kicking the game-winning field goal from 24-yards out to give McNeese a 23-21 lead over UCA with 7:27 to play in the fourth quarter.

The senior from Lafayette scored 11 of the Cowboys’ 23 points on the night, going 3-for-3 in field goals and 2-2 in PATs. He also booted field goals of 34 and 33 yards, both coming in the first half.

Lamar quarterback Jordan Hoy was named the league’s offensive player of the week.

For the season, McNeese has received nine player of the week accolades among eight players.

The win over UCA lifted the Cowboys back as the sole leader in the conference standings with a 5-1 mark. McNeese will visit Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at 2:30 in a game that will be televised on Cox Sports TV.

COWBOYS JUMP IN FCS TOP 25 POLLS

McNeese moved up three spots to No. 11 in this week’s STATS FCS Media poll and to No. 12 in the AFCA Coaches Top 25 rankings after this past Saturday’s 23-21 over then-No. 13 Central Arkansas.

The win improved the Cowboys’ record to 6-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in Southland Conference play. McNeese is alone atop the league standings after Saturday’s victory and a loss by Incarnate Word to Nicholls.

This marks the 17th consecutive week to be ranked in the polls, dating back to last season.

Three other conference schools are ranked – Central Arkansas No. 19 in the STATS and AFCA poll, Nicholls is 20th in both polls, and Sam Houston State is No. 21 in STATS and 22 in the AFCA rankings.

UIW and Lamar each received votes for the STATS poll.
