Nicholls’ Canady, Lamar’s Austridge earn Southland Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors

Southland 60th anniversary

FRISCO, Texas – Randy Canady of Nicholls and Yasmin Austridge of Lamar earned the Southland Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards for the fourth week of league action, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Men’s Athlete of the Week: Randy Canady, Nicholls – R-Jr. – Groesbeck, Texas (Groesbeck HS)
Canady had an impressive showing at the LSU Invitational last week, completing the 6-kilometer course in 18:40.4, placing sixth individually and fourth amongst attached runners. The Colonels placed second in the team standings behind LSU.
Honorable Mention: Jacob Kipkogei, McNeese.

Women’s Athlete of the Week: Yasmin Austridge, Lamar – Sr. – London, England
Austridge was the champion of the McNeese Cowboy Stampede, completing the 5-kilometer course with a time of 17:55.8 – more than 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Lamar placed second in the team standings. This is Austridge’s second Athlete of the Week award this season.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
