THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls State University baseball program solidified its 2020 schedule Tuesday afternoon, locking down a vigorous non-conference slate with just over five months until first pitch.

The Colonels open the season behind three consecutive weeks at Didier Field, hosting a pair of tournaments, a series against LIU-Brooklyn and two midweek matchups — vs. LSU (Feb. 19) and Valparaiso (Mar. 3) — before shifting focus to Southland Conference play in early March, traveling east for a three-game series against UNO, set for Mar. 6-8 in New Orleans, La.

With head coach Seth Thibodeaux entering his 10th season at the helm, Nicholls endeavors to fight back into contention for a slot in the Southland Conference Tournament after narrowly missing the field last year. With a dominant 165-94 (.637) record at home under Thibodeaux, the skipper managed to procure a lengthy home slate for the Colonels during the 2020 campaign, cementing 34 matchups in total — not to mention the first 12 contests of the season — at Didier Field.

“I think we worked really hard over the last year and a half to put this schedule together, and we’ll reap the benefits during the season as we are set to play a significant number of home games here at Didier Field,” Thibodeaux said. “I think opposing teams want to come here and play as well, and clinching two tournaments here in Thibodaux to open the season is just another opportunity to take advantage of our excellent facilities. Our pre-conference schedule is very competitive, and we’re excited to get some programs from different regions of the country down here to play.”

Following the Southland opening weekend at New Orleans, the Red & Gray return to Thibodaux for three of their next four league series, notably hosting last season’s tournament runner-up Central Arkansas (Mar. 13-15) and 2018 conference champion Northwestern State (Apr. 3-5). Noteworthy league contests include home series with rival Southeastern Louisiana (Apr. 17-19) & Abilene Christian (May 8-10) along with road weekends at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Mar. 20-22), UIW (Apr. 9-11) & Stephen F. Austin (May 1-3).

“Competing this league has a lot to do with your conference schedule,” Thibodeaux continued. “We’re fortunate that Northwestern State will be coming here this year, and that McNeese is not slated for a conference series. Southeastern Louisiana comes here as well, and our lone Louisiana roadtrip goes to UNO where we have some of the most dedicated and hardcore alumni who can come out and support us. Our long roadtrips are to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which will get us ready for the conference tournament, and heading down to San Antonio to face UIW. I like how we’re set up in the conference this season, and I’m honestly just psyched to get back into the action.”

Nicholls wraps up the 2020 regular season schedule May 14-16 with a three-game series against HBU, trekking south to battle the Huskies before potentially advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas.
