THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University football announced Wednesday the addition of two student-athletes as the Colonels signed offensive lineman Ryan Bernard and linebacker Brandon Lairy on National Signing Day.

A native of Mandeville, Bernard is a high school recruit out of Lakeshore High School. Lairy comes to Thibodaux after graduating from West Point in Mississippi and spending three years at East Mississippi Community College.

Nicholls graduated only 11 seniors from this past season and return eight of its All-Southland honorees.

Selected to 2021 All-MACCC/North Division Second Team… second-leading tackler on Coach Buddy Stephens’ 9-1 (MACCC North Division champions) and seventh-ranked East Mississippi Community College Lions team with 54 total tackles this past season… had six tackles for loss (2 QB sacks), four pass breakups, one interception (48-yard return at Southwest Mississippi) and a fumble recovery (vs. Holmes) in 2021… Sacks came during back-to-back games vs. Holmes and Northwest Mississippi… major force among EMCC’s vaunted defensive unit that led NJCAA Division I teams in scoring defense (12.8 ppg) and ranked fourth nationally in total defense (230.5 yds/gm) as well as having limited seven of 10 opponents to single-digit scoring totals in 2021… member of West Point High School’s three straight (2016-17-18) MHSAA Class 5A state championship teams… was a 5A All-State Second Team selection as a junior and senior.
