YOUNGSVILLE – Liza Lapeyre of Isidore Newman improved her regional score by seven strokes and shot two-under on the back nine Monday to claim the individual lead in the girls Division II Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships.

Lapeyre posted a one-over 75 that included three birdies in her final eight holes over the 5,679-yard par-74 Les Vieux Chenes course. That score is good enough for a two-stroke lead over Carly Whittington of Lacassine and a four-stroke lead over Cassidy Lambert of Academy of the Sacred Heart going into Tuesday’s second and final round.

Whittington had a 77 and Lacassine teammate Daphney Tilton posted an 81, good enough to tie for fifth individually, and their combined 158 score has Lacassine five shots in front of Newman and Sacred Heart in the team race. Newman and Sacred Heart both carded a 163 score.

Lacassine is the defending champion, winning the title by three strokes over Sacred Heart last year in its first appearance after missing the state meet for two straight years. Episcopal stands in fourth place at 169 with Riely Heaslip posting an 81 to stand tied with Tilton for sixth.

Shrayon Thibodeaux of Catholic High-New Iberia, playing as an individual, posted an 80 to stand in sole possession of fourth place going into Tuesday’s final round.
