NEW ORLEANS — Isidore Newman School is pleased to announce the scheduling of a home football game vs. Berkeley Preparatory School of Tampa, Florida for the 2021 football season. The Greenies will host the Berkeley Prep Buccaneers at Michael Lupin Field on Friday, October 22, 2021 in New Orleans. This marks the first time the Greenies have played an out-of-state opponent since the 1960s.

“Playing a national team is an important moment for our football program and we look forward to welcoming Berkeley Prep to New Orleans. It is a tremendous institution with an equally strong reputation in both academics and athletics,” Newman’s Athletic Director Patrick Summerour said. “My thanks to Headmaster Joseph Seivold and Berkeley Prep Athletic Director Bobby Reinhart for their commitment to holding this milestone event for both of our football programs.”

While this will be the first time these two schools have met, Newman has played an out-of-state opponent one other time in its storied history. From 1965-1967, Newman had a three-game home and away series with The Kinkaid School of Houston, playing two games in Houston and one game at Behrman Stadium, which served as Newman’s home field for many years.

“It is an exciting time to be a part of Newman football, playing our first national opponent in over 50 years. Both programs are fortunate to have very talented rosters with many early Division I commitments. I hope this is the first of many future national matchups for our team,” said Newman Head Football Coach Nelson Stewart.

Newman comes off a successful 2020 season with an undefeated regular season (8-0) before falling in the semi-finals to the eventual state champion Lafayette Christian. This was the fifth undefeated season in Newman football history. The Greenies open the 2021 season on September 3, 2021 vs. Lusher Charter School at Michael Lupin Field.
