One team is looking to expand its regular season win streak while the other will be in search of its first win when Division III power Newman steps up in class to take on Class 5A East Jefferson at Joe Yenni Stadium tonight at 6:30 p.m.

You can watch the game live at CrescentCitySports.com and listen to it live on WGSO 990 AM and at WGSO.com beginning at 6:05 with Lonn Ellzey and Jordan Liuzza joining me on the call.

Nelson Stewart’s Greenies are seventh in the CrescentCitySports.com Class 2A rankings and are sixth in the Louisiana Sportswriters Class 2A poll. The Greenies have won 14 consecutive regular season games after going unbeaten in the regular season in 2017, reaching the Division III semifinals.

Newman has dominated a pair of lesser opponents, spanking McMain 34-7 before drilling Thomas Jefferson 64-7.

Senior quarterback Martin Butcher, who broke Peyton Manning’s season best school records for passing yardage and completions a year ago, is off to a good start in 2018.

Butcher has completed 27-of-37 passes for 440 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions. His top receivers are junior Jarmone Sutherland and senior Murray Calhoun. Sutherland has 11 catches for 212 yards and five touchdowns while Calhoun has 10 catches for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Senior T.J. Bush leads the rushing attack with 15 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, senior linebacker Liam Rowan leads the way with eight tackles and an interception while senior strong safety Eli Abramson has seven tackles and an interception. Junior Brandon Williams is superb up front. He has a sack, coming off of a season with eight sacks a year ago.

East Jefferson has lost in convincing fashion to Helen Cox (39-8) and to Lakeshore (34-0), a pair of good teams.

Frank Allelo’s Warriors have struggled to get their Flexbone offense going.

Senior quarterback Cornelius Beasley leads the way with 25 carries for 232 yards and a touchdown and he has completed 6-of-15 passes but for just 29 yards with a pair of interceptions. Senior Leroy Friloux has 34 carries for 136 yards.

Defensively, junior inside linebacker Ahmad Harris leads the way with 22.5 tackles while senior defensive end Darrius Harry is outstanding. Harry has offers from McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State and Colorado State. Senior free safety Kendo Williams has 17 tackles.

Newman defeated East Jefferson 38-21 at Lupin Field a year ago as James Poche rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns for the Greenies. Zach Weidow rushed for 126 yards for the Warriors.
