New Orleans’ Asia Woods named SLC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

Woods shoots 62.5 percent from the field in Privateers’ 2-0 week

FRISCO, Texas – New Orleans’ Asia Woods is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Woods pushed the Privateers (14-10, 10-5 SLC) to a pair of wins at home last week over Central Arkansas and UIW, averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds per game along the way. She was extremely effective from the field with a 62.5-percent clip from the floor and an 80-percent average from the free-throw line. The award marks the first of the senior’s career.

Woods averaged 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists per game during the Privateers perfect 2-0 week at home. She recorded her sixth double-double of the season against UIW with 13 of her 15 rebounds coming on the offensive end of the floor. She also tied her career-high in assists in each game with five dimes per contest. The senior closed out the week shooting 62.5 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity stripe to boost the Privateers to their 10th conference win of the season, the program’s most since the 2017-18 campaign.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
