THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University football had two selections on the Phil Steele FCS 2020 Preseason All-American Teams as senior offensive lineman P.J. Burkhalter was named first team and senior wide receiver Dai’Jean Dixon was a fourth-team honoree.

Burkhalter, who has been on the top team in each of the four preseason All-American teams released so far this season, and Dixon are two of the 12 Southland Conference selections. Burkhalter was the lone SLC member on first-team offense.

A native of Franklinton, Louisiana, Burkhalter is a three-year starter on the offensive line that has helped produce the Southland’s top rushing offense the past two years. He played at both center and guard last season as running back Julien Gums set school rushing records with 1,232 yards and 16 touchdowns. Burkhalter was voted as the top lineman in the Southland in 2019.

Dixon garnered his first preseason All-American after a historic junior campaign where he became the first Colonel since 1986 to record over 1,000 yards receiving. He missed 5.5 games with an injury and still had the second-most receiving yards in the Southland with 1,044 on 54 receptions. His 116.0 yards per game was second-best in the FCS, helped by five 100-yard games. His best outing was in the River Bell Classic victory at Southeastern Louisiana where he totaled 190 yards and three touchdowns.

In addition to the All-American team, Phil Steele announced its All-Southland Preseason Team. All eight Colonels who were named to the Southland Preseason Teams earlier this month – Burkhalter, Dixon, Gums, Mikhail Hill, Jair Joseph, Jeremiah James, Kevin Moore III, and Evan Veron – were on the Phil Steele teams, and were joined by third-team linebacker Giovanni LaFrance. A transfer from Arkansas, LaFrance had 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and an interception in his first season with the Colonels.
