Mount Carmel, Dominican, Ben Franklin, Cabrini, PJP, Country Day reach state volleyball finals

Six area teams seek state championships in the finals of the LHSAA State Volleyball Championships today at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

In Division I, district rivals Mount Carmel Academy and Dominican will meet in the rubber match of the season to determine the title at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

The top-seeded Cubs (33-7) fought past No. 4 Fontainebleau in four sets Friday as Emily Meyer had 17 kills and 27 digs while Tori Frught had 48 assists and a pair of aces. Abby Hunt finished with 24 kills for the Bulldogs.

No. 3 Dominican (34-10) advanced by defeating No. 2 Mandeville in four sets. Elizabeth Hardouin had 10 kills and 16 digs while Kate Baker had eight kills and 26 assists. Taylor Pierce finished with 14 kills for the Skippers.

In Division II, No. 2 Ben Franklin moved on with a four set victory over No. 3 Assumption.

Kennedi George paced the Falcons (41-6) with 24 kills, 16 digs, three assists and three blocks while Madeleine Meeker had 18 kills, four blocks and two aces as Ben Franklin advanced to the title match for the first time since 2004. Ben Franklin will square off with top seed Teurlings Catholic at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rebels handled rival and No. 5 St. Thomas More in straight sets as Paige Guidry had 14 kills and two aces and Tyler Alcorn had seven kills, three blocks and an ace.

In Division III, top-seeded Cabrini took care of rival and fourth seed Ursuline Academy in straight sets as Kai Williams had 11 kills and Jen Brue finished with 37 assists. The Crescents (34-4) will square off with No. 2 E.D. White Catholic in the title match Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cardinals took care of No. 3 Westlake in straight sets. Lila Bordis had 21 kills and 16 digs while Caroline Gros had 36 assists.

In Division IV, No. 3 Pope John Paul II (33-7) took care of No. 7 Notre Dame in straight sets. Rachel Hartmann had 14 kills and five blocks, Ansley Tullis had eight kills and 23 digs and Kendall Battistella finished with 31 assists and 21 digs. The Jaguars will face No. 1 Lafayette Christian (36-4) in the championship match. The Knights dismissed No. 4 Parkview Baptist in straight sets to advance to the title match for the first time. Kiera Washington had 13 kills and five aces while Sam Gilmore finished with 43 digs, 11 assists and two aces.

In Division V, top seed Country Day is in search of a fourth straight state championship after the Cajuns whipped No. 5 McGehee in straight sets. Nia Washington finished with nine kills, 10 digs and two aces while Kelsey Dinvaut had seven kills. Kamryn Thomas added six kills. Harriet Butscher led the Hawks with six kills. Country Day will face No. 2 Central Catholic at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Central Catholic (32-10) downed No. 11 Highland Baptist in four sets. Terre’Yan Johnson had 32 kills for the Eagles.
