Mooney homers during eclipse, but ‘Cakes lose in Memphis

MEMPHIS – Peter Mooney drilled a sixth inning home run on the day of the solar eclipse, but it was not enough as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the New Orleans Baby Cakes 5-1.

Tyler O’Neill was hit by a pitch, Aledmys Diaz walked and Patrick Wisdom hit his team leading 29th home run of the season to give Memphis a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Jack Flaherty pitched seven innings, allowed one run on six hits and earned his sixth win of the season. Keyvius Sampson allowed three runs and suffered the loss.

Memphis added a pair in the seventh inning when Breyvic Valera hit a solo home run and Wisdom picked up an infield hit to score O’Neill.

New Orleans (51-75) has dropped 11 of 16 meetings this season to the division champion Memphis Redbirds (84-45).

GAME NOTES: New Orleans added pitcher Daniel Schlereth from Class AA Jacksonville.

UPCOMING: The ‘Cakes continue the four game series at Memphis, Tuesday at 6:35 PM. New Orleans will start RHP Scott Copeland against RHP Kevin Herget.
