Cameron Foster

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese relief pitcher and Southland Conference Relief Pitcher of the Year Cameron Foster was selected by the New York Mets in the 14th round of the 2022 MLB Draft.

Foster, a native of Houston, was the 16th player taken by the Mets in the draft and the 419th pick overall.

“It was exciting to get the call,” said Foster. “The area scout called me and told me congratulations that I’ve been drafted by the Mets. I’m happy to be going to a place that wants me and look forward to getting to work.”

Foster said he’ll find out his destination once the draft is completed.

“I’ll do whatever they need me to do,” he said about the organization. “Whether it’s to come out of the (bull) pen or as a starter. I’ve done both so I know I can do it. Obviously the dream is to make it to the Big Leagues in a few years.”

Foster is the 15th player under head coach Justin Hill to be drafted or sign a free agent contract and will be the 13th McNeese Baseball alum to be actively playing in professional baseball.

“I’m so proud of Cam,” said Hill. “His talent is easy to see and the numbers back it up, but his ability to overcome adversity and consistently perform at a high-level night in and night out is what made him so special. I’m excited for him. He has a chance to make it.”

This past season, Foster earned ABCA All-America honors and led the league in six different categories including saves (12), ERA (1.86), strikeouts (84), batting average against (.164), hits allowed (35), runs allowed (17), and ranked second in the conference in walks allowed (20).

His 12 saves this season tied a single-season school record which has been held by Jordan LeGros and set in 2011. He ended his McNeese career ranked second all-time with 18 saves.

He was a first team All-SLC selection after compiling a 4-2 record with a 1.86 ERA and 12 saves. He struck out 84 batters in 63 innings pitched and made a team-high 29 appearances.
