LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football officially closed the door on the 2017 training camp on Saturday morning with its final scrimmage of the preseason that featured more situations than sustained drives as the Cowboys are now just 12 days away from the season opener on August 31 at Nicholls.

“There were a lot of good things to get on film and a lot to teach off of,” said head coach Lance Guidry of the scrimmage. “It was good and bad, but there were a lot of good and bad.”

Both the offense and defense provided positive plays bot the offense had the biggest play of the day when running a situation with the balled placed at the 1 going out, the offense faced a 3rd-and-10 with the ball at the 10-yard line when backup quarterback Matt Keller found wide receiver Nick Edwards on a crossing route that turned into a 90-yard touchdown play.

“That was a huge play for the offense,” said Guidry. “Defensively, that breaks your back.”

Guidry and staff will take this film along with last week’s and will start putting together the depth chart for the opener.

“I saw a lot of good things today,” he said. “We’ll take this and start looking at the depth chart and see who we can count on and see who just had a bad day. Sometimes some guys just have a bad day and sometimes some guys have a good day.

“I thought it was a really good scrimmage for us to get a lot of good situations in.”

The controlled scrimmage started out with a 2-minute drill with the first, second and third team offenses and defenses running series. Third-and-short situations followed then third-and-long, goal line and overtime as well as live kicking, punting and field goal situations.

“This was definitely a good way to end camp,” said Guidry. “We got to look at everything. We got to look at coming out and going in, red zone, third down, 2-minute offense, backed up punt, just all the different situations.”

The Cowboys will take the next two days off from the practice field as school begins on Monday. They’ll return to practice on Tuesday afternoon to prepare for Nicholls.

NOTE: Because of the situations in the scrimmage, stats were not kept.
