LAKE CHARLES – McNeese men’s basketball head coach Heath Schroyer has announced the signing of his second signee of the period, 6-foot-5 guard Johnathan Massie out of Legacy Charter in Houston.

Massie is rated as the No. 9 player in the Greater Houston Area by On The Radar. Last week, the Cowboys signed 6-7 post Shaun Walker from Manvel HS who is ranked 11th by OTR in the Houston area.

“Johnathan is a special talent,” said Schroyer. “He’s a big, strong, physical guard who can score it at all three levels. His ceiling is off the charts. I’m so excited to have this young man in our program.”

Massie preps at Legacy Charter in Houston and is one of seven players on that team that has received Division I offers and has been named to the OTR All-Preseason Top Performer Team.

“The coaching staff is one of the main reasons I signed with McNeese,” said Massie. “I’ve built a great relationship with Coach Shroyer, Coach Aiken and Coach Courtney. They’ve been real with me.

“I earned this scholarship. I didn’t have anyone reach out to them. They found me after watching me play in a game and things just built from there.

“Another thing that I liked was the teams they play in non-conference games.”

Massie is expected to compete for major minutes as a freshman in the 2021-22 season.

“My staff has done a tremendous job,” said Schroyer. “Recruiting is the life blood of any program and being able to sign these two young men early this year tells you how good my staff is and how far we’ve come in a short couple of years. It’s a great day to be a Cowboy!”
