LAKE CHARLES – Part seven of a series previewing the McNeese Cowboys as they begin fall camp on Thursday with the first practice scheduled for Friday morning.

2019 McNeese Football Fall Camp Preview: Defensive Backs

Cornerbacks – Two experienced players returning in first team All-Southland Conference selection Colby Burton and Darion Dunn, who has some starts under his belt.

Both Burton and Dunn tied for the team lead with two interceptions each last season while Dunn recorded 33 tackles and Burton 31. Burton had two interceptions in a win over 13th-ranked UCA last season to garner him SLC Defensive Player of the Week honors while also being named a STATS honorable mention defensive player of the week.

Dunn picked up SLC defensive weekly honors against HBU when he intercepted two passes to go along with five tackles.

Also returning is senior Calum Foster who has played in 30 games in his career and made 64 tackles with two interceptions.

Sophomore Colby Richardson missed some time last season due to injuries but he ranks up there as one of the most athletic corners the Cowboys have on the roster.

Redshirt freshman Andre Sam could see some time at cornerback as well as safety.

Safeties – Returning starter Cory McCoy is one of several experienced safeties. McCoy was the Buck Safety last season so he’s going to be playing a little bit different spot than in the past. He ranked third on the team last season with 59 tackles, recorded six tackles for a loss and intercepted one pass.

Senior Jovon Burriss is back for his second and final season. Burriss ranked fifth on the team last season with 48 tackles and tied for the team lead with two pass interceptions.

Junior Gabe Foster returns after recording 20 tackles with an interception (49 yard TD return against Northern Colorado) and three pass break ups.

Outlook – There’s a good amount of players that have seen a significant amount of playing time while also getting some starts under their belt. The backfield did a great job during the spring and summer soaking in the new playbook and schemes.
