McNeese falls at Arizona State, 80-52

TEMPE, Ariz. – A quick start by McNeese was overrun after the first five minutes of the game against Arizona State here Friday night as the Sun Devils rolled off a 19-3 run in a seven-minute span after McNeese stormed out to an 8-3 lead, then coasted to an 80-52 win over the Cowboys.

McNeese (0-2) shot just 32 percent for the game, and two days after pouring in 26 points in his Cowboys’ debut, Malik Hines was held to just one point and didn’t take a shot from the field as the graduate transfer played just 24 minutes after being in foul trouble most of the game.

Point guard Kevin Hunt was the only Cowboy to score in double-digits for the game with a team-high 15 points. Will Robinson and Roydell Brown added nine points each and James Harvey scored eight. Brown led the Cowboys with eight rebounds.

ASU (2-0) had three players score in double-digits and was led by true freshman Luguentz Dort’s 25 points. Kimani Lawrence and Zylan Cheatham added 16 points apiece. The Sun Devils shot 47 percent for the game (27 of 58) but connected on 55 percent (16 of 29) in the second half.

McNeese trailed 33-23 at the break and pulled to within 27-21 after a couple of Harvey free throws with 3:24 to play before ASU extended the lead to 10 points at the break.

Trey Touchet got the Cowboys off to a good start in the second half with a 3-pointer to make it a 33-26 game and the Cowboys hung about an 8-10 point deficit through the first three minutes of the second half before the Sun Devils widened the margin to 14 points following a couple of Dort free throws and a 3-pointer by Remy Martin to make it a 43-29 advantage with 16:37 to play.

A 3 by Hunt two minutes later pulled McNeese to within 45-32 with 14:45 to play then ASU rolled off eight straight points to go up 53-32 with 11:50 to play in the game.

The Sun Devils put together a 9-0 run three minutes later to take a 67-38 lead before the two teams traded scores the rest of the way with the final points coming on a layup by AJ Brown to make it an 80-52 score.

ASU held a 43-31 advantage in the rebounding with Brown leading the Cowboys with his eight boards.

Cheatham led the Sun Devils with 12 rebounds to post a double-double along with his 16 points. He also dished out five assists.

McNeese connected on 5 of 20 from long range for the game and was 17 of 29 at the free throw line. Harvey and Hunt each chipped in two 3-point baskets to lead the way.

The Cowboys will next be in action on Friday, Nov. 16 when they open their home slate against Loyola of New Orleans.
