LAKE CHARLES – Every year when the calendar turns to August it brings the beginning of the new athletic season.

For 2022-23, it brings a first in history for the McNeese Athletic Department as all 10 head coaches will begin their new slates with either continuing or beginning multi-year contracts.

“I’m excited that all of our (head) coaches are on multi-year contracts now,” said Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer. “It was a priority for me a few years ago when I moved into this chair. It’s pretty simple to me, if we want to play ‘Big Time Athletics’ we need to act accordingly, and this is a big step in that direction.”

The latest coach to sign a multi-year extension was track and field/cross country head coach Brendon Gilroy which followed multi-year signings for new Cowgirl tennis head coach Gabby Moore and first-year volleyball head coach Sasha Karelov.

“As a former college coach, I know the importance of having a multi-year contract,” said Schroyer. “It helps keep continuity in the program and helps in recruiting. When student-athletes know we, as an institution, are committed to their coach and the program, it sends a message.

“Every coach in our department I have either hired or signed to a new contract at this point. I truly believe we have the best coaching staff ever assembled at McNeese. They all work extremely hard and represent our University in a professional, first class, manner. Work ethic and professionalism are non-negotiables for me, and they all possess those characteristics.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s a new day for McNeese Athletics and the future has never been brighter. Geaux Pokes!”
