LAKE CHARLES — McNeese head women’s soccer coach Drew Fitzgerald has announced the 2022 schedule which includes 10 home games at Cowgirl Field, six of which are Southland Conference games.

“I am excited about the challenge and opportunities that are on this year’s non-conference schedule,” said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. “Playing at Texas A&M and South Alabama will provide us with an early look at what it will take to compete in an NCAA Tournament match. In particular, the atmosphere at Texas A&M is special and an experience that will only help us down the road.

“We play several teams that we have history with but who will feature new head coaches, so that always makes things interesting. UL-Lafayette, Sam Houston, Troy, and Lamar all have new staffs and likely will look very different than in the past.”

The Cowgirls will play an exhibition game at UL-Lafayette on Aug. 10 prior to its regular season opener at home against former Southland foe Sam Houston on Aug. 19. Other non-conference home matches include Southern (Aug. 31), Lamar (Sept. 4), and Texas Southern (Sept. 11).

A stretch of three consecutive road games beginning Aug. 21 at Texas A&M followed by road contests against Troy (Aug. 25) and South Alabama (Aug. 28), two matches that be played in Mobile, Alabama, will give the Cowgirls early challenges before returning home for two matches before the start of conference play.

“Conference play will be as competitive as always. Texas A&M- Commerce will be a completely new challenge. Coach Gordon is a proven winner, so we expect those matches to be hard fought. I expect Nicholls to be much improved as their roster is basically entirely new, and their staff enters their second season. Southeastern is under new leadership as well with Coach Gillespie taking over after being on staff the last three seasons. I’m sure he’ll add some new wrinkles and have them as competitive as ever.

“Of all the seasons I’ve coached here, this is the most competitive from top to bottom that I’ve seen the Southland. Basically, we know that every match will be a battle and there will be no days off. It’s going to be exciting.”

The 13-match Southland Conference slate will start on the road at Houston Baptist on Sept. 9. Following another road game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16, the Cowgirls will play three straight home matches.

McNeese will host newly SLC member Texas A&M-Commerce (Sept. 23), Texas A&M-CC (Sept. 25), and Southeastern (Sept. 30).

The month of October has McNeese playing four of its final seven games on the road including games at Northwestern State, Nicholls, Southeastern, and Texas A&M-Commerce.

The three home matches in October include Nicholls (Oct. 14), Northwestern State (Oct. 26), and Houston Baptist (Oct. 28) in the regular season finale.

Northwestern State will host the Southland Conference Tournament Nov. 2-6 with the winner representing the league in the NCAA Tournament.
