McGill-Toolen and Edna Karr capture titles at Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic

Whitehaven and St. Aug Earn Runner-Up Recognition

NEW ORLEANS – McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and Edna Karr High School were the girls’ and boys’ winners, respectively, at the 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic, which wrapped up on a sunny, but windy, Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium. Since 1993, this event has been the largest high school track and field invitational in Louisiana; this year’s meet featured 126 boys’ and girls’ teams (83 different schools) from four states (Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee).

Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field

The McGill-Toolen girls had a dominant performance, finishing with 100 points to earn their first championship in the event since 2003. Whitehaven High School of Memphis, Tenn., earned second place with 58 points, while Edna Karr (48 points) was third in the girls’ division.

Edna Karr captured the boys’ championship in a tightly-contested event that came down to the 4×400 relay, the final event of the day. The Cougars finished with 55 points to edge St. Augustine, which had 45 points and John Curtis (42.5 points). It was Edna Karr’s first championship in the meet.

The Outstanding Girls’ Track Performer for the meet was McGill-Toolen senior Grace Jensen, who won the 800-meter run, the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run while adding a victory in the 4×800 relay. Her 3,200-meter time of 11:18.29 was the fourth-best in meet history. Jensen’s Yellow Jacket teammate, junior Hannah Daffin, was selected as the Outstanding Girls’ Field Performer after winning the discus with a throw of 123-10 (fifth all-time in meet history) and taking third in the shot put at 37-11.75 (ninth all-time in meet history).

On the boys’ side, St. Aug senior Donovan Rolland posted victories in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. His 200-meter time of 21.46 ranks fourth all-time in meet history while his 100 time of 10.53 is the eighth-best effort in meet annals. Tzuriel Pedigo, a senior from Parkview Baptist, shattered his own meet record in the javelin by over 11 feet with a throw of 217-05 to be honored as the Outstanding Boys’ Field Performer.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 93 Hall of Fame players, 49 Hall of Fame coaches and 18 Heisman Trophy winners in its 84-year history. The 85th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, featuring top teams from the Big 12 and the SEC, will be played on January 1, 2019. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1.6 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors nearly 100,000 student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.5 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
